The Acanthurus auranticavus, commonly called the Orangeband Surgeonfish, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its bright orange band and active swimming behaviour. This extra large specimen is ideal for advanced marine aquarists with spacious tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and territorial nature. It requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive, especially towards conspecifics and similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space to reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional meaty foods can be offered to supplement nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimics its natural reef habitat and supports its health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Native to the Western Pacific Ocean, often found around coral reefs.
Maximum Size: Can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
