Lutjanus gibbus, commonly called the Humpback Snapper, is a visually impressive snapper species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This medium-sized fish is characterised by its distinctive hump on the head and striking colouration, making it a captivating addition to large marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and temperament, this species is best suited for experienced hobbyists.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Humpback Snapper is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially in confined spaces. It is generally compatible with other robust fish species but may prey on smaller tankmates. Avoid housing with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or fresh meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish fillets. Supplement with specialised carnivore pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish healthy and active.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming areas along with rockwork or caves for shelter. Ensure the tank is well-established with stable water parameters.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
With proper care and a suitably large aquarium, Lutjanus gibbus can be a stunning and rewarding species to maintain.
