The Sebae Snapper (Lutjanus sebae) is a visually impressive species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its bold red and white patterning and dynamic presence. This tiny specimen is ideal for hobbyists seeking to establish a future adult snapper in a large, well-maintained marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Sebae Snapper requires stable water parameters and a spacious environment to accommodate its growth and active swimming behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is semi-aggressive and may show territorial behaviour, especially as it matures. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger robust fish. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species to prevent stress or predation.
Diet: Carnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as shrimp, fish fillets, and specialised carnivore pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended for a tiny specimen, with plans to upgrade as the fish grows, as adults can reach up to 70 cm in length.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish active and healthy.
Placement: Provide ample swimming space with rockwork for shelter and territory establishment. Ensure the tank is securely covered as snappers are known to be strong jumpers.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea and East Africa to the western Pacific.
With proper care, the Sebae Snapper can become a stunning centrepiece in a large marine aquarium, offering both beauty and dynamic behaviour.
