Lutjanus kasmira, commonly known as the Bluebanded Snapper, is a visually stunning addition to large marine aquariums. This extra large specimen displays vibrant yellow colouring with distinctive blue horizontal stripes, making it a standout fish for experienced hobbyists.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Bluebanded Snapper is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially in confined spaces. It is best housed with similarly sized robust fish and should not be kept with very small or timid species. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is limited, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Diet: This carnivorous species thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as frozen or live crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active swimming behaviour and potential adult size of up to 30 cm, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended. The aquarium should provide ample swimming space with robust filtration and regular water changes to maintain water quality.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and careful monitoring of tank mates.
Reef Safety: No. This species may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish, so it is unsuitable for reef tanks with vulnerable inhabitants.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
