Tridacna derasa, known as the Derasa Clam, is a prized addition to reef aquariums due to its impressive size and vibrant mantle colours. At 8cm, this clam is a juvenile specimen that will grow significantly under optimal conditions.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or high-output LED systems is essential to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to avoid tissue damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or in direct strong currents.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful but can be sensitive to aggressive tankmates and poor water quality.
Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres recommended to accommodate growth and maintain stable water conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can reach up to 30cm in length in mature specimens.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is important to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
