Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a prized invertebrate for marine reef aquariums due to its impressive size and vibrant mantle colours. This clam reaches substantial sizes in captivity and requires dedicated care to maintain optimal health.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species demands stable water parameters and strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on intense lighting for its symbiotic algae. Supplementary feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can be beneficial.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide or strong LED systems is essential to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to avoid mantle damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area of the tank. Avoid direct strong currents and ensure the clam is secure to prevent movement.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in captivity under optimal conditions.
