Ostracion meleagris, commonly known as the male spotted boxfish, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums. Recognisable by its distinctive spotted pattern and box-like body shape, this species adds both colour and character to a well-maintained tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy. It is best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Ostracion meleagris may nip at small invertebrates or sessile invertebrates, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-26°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Additional Notes: This species produces a mild toxin when stressed, so avoid aggressive tank mates and handle with care. Regular water changes and a balanced diet will help maintain vibrant colouration and health.
