Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Ostracion meleagris requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy. It may release toxins if stressed, so careful handling and tank mates selection are essential.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets or flakes. Supplement with algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Compatibility: Best kept with peaceful tank mates. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species. Suitable for reef tanks with caution due to potential toxin release.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding spots with live rock and open swimming areas. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
