The Ostracion meleagris, commonly known as the spotted boxfish, is a fascinating marine species prized for its unique box-like shape and striking spotted pattern. The female exhibits a distinctive colouration compared to the male, typically featuring a dark body with white spots, making it a visually captivating addition to a large marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is best suited for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Ostracion meleagris females are generally peaceful but can be shy. They are best kept singly or as a mated pair in a community tank with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with large, aggressive fish that may stress or outcompete them.
Diet: In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine-based frozen foods, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised herbivore pellets. Supplement with algae and vegetable matter to mimic their natural omnivorous feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Due to their size and swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to keep water quality high.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Ostracion meleagris may nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals, so monitor closely if kept in reef systems.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
