Pterois mombasae, commonly known as the Mombasa Lionfish, is a captivating species prized for its dramatic appearance and unique behaviour. This medium-sized scorpionfish displays striking banded fins and venomous spines, making it a standout addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is recommended for experienced aquarists due to its venomous spines and specific husbandry needs. Handle with caution and respect.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Mombasa Lionfish is generally solitary and territorial. It can be aggressive towards smaller or slow-moving fish but is usually peaceful with larger, robust tankmates. Avoid housing with small, delicate species to prevent predation.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Pterois mombasae thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic its natural reef environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity between 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to replicate natural reef currents.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is suitable, with shaded areas to allow the fish to retreat if desired. Position the lionfish in a quieter section of the tank to reduce stress.
Reef Safety: With Caution – While generally reef compatible, Pterois mombasae may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish. Careful selection of tankmates is essential.
Origin: Native to the Western Indian Ocean, including the coastal waters around Mombasa, Kenya.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 20 cm in length.
