Pterois mombasae, commonly known as the Mombasa Lionfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish native to the Western Indian Ocean. This species is prized for its striking appearance and distinctive fin rays, making it a captivating addition to mature marine aquaria.
Care Level: Due to its venomous spines and specialised care requirements, the Mombasa Lionfish is recommended for experienced aquarists only.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pterois mombasae is generally solitary and can be territorial. It should be housed with similarly sized or larger tank mates to avoid predation or stress. Avoid keeping with small, slow-moving fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: This carnivorous species thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times weekly to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is advised to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush hunting. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not inherently reef destructive, the Mombasa Lionfish may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking natural reef shadows. Water flow should be moderate to allow comfortable swimming without excessive current stress.
Origin: Western Indian Ocean, including coastal regions near Mombasa.
Maximum Size: Up to approximately 20 cm in length.
