Sargocentron spiniferum, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a visually stunning nocturnal species prized in marine aquariums for its vibrant red hues and characteristic spiny dorsal fins. This medium-sized fish is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specific care needs and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to match natural nocturnal behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is suitable. The species is nocturnal and prefers dimmer conditions during the day with plenty of shaded areas.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves to allow hiding during daylight hours. Position in a quieter section of the aquarium to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 25 cm (10 inches) in captivity.
This species is not reef safe as it may prey on small invertebrates and ornamental shrimp. It is best housed in fish-only or fish-plus systems.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain health. Avoid aggressive tank mates and ensure a diet rich in protein to support its nocturnal feeding habits.
