Odontanthias borbonius is a striking medium-sized anthias species prized for its vibrant colours and graceful swimming behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide a stable, mature reef environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Odontanthias borbonius is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other peaceful reef fish but should not be housed with aggressive or overly boisterous tankmates. Ideal companions include other anthias species, wrasses, and gobies.
Diet: This anthias thrives on a varied diet consisting of high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding multiple times a day is recommended to mimic natural feeding habits and maintain vibrant colouration.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. The aquarium should be well-established with stable water parameters, moderate to strong water flow, and plenty of live rock for shelter and grazing.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable alkalinity and calcium levels suitable for reef aquariums.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate to strong lighting is suitable, especially in reef setups with corals. Place Odontanthias borbonius in mid to upper water columns where it can swim freely but also find shelter among rockwork.
With attentive care and proper tank conditions, Odontanthias borbonius can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a marine aquarium.
