Odontanthias borbonius is a strikingly colourful anthias species prized by marine aquarium hobbyists for its vibrant appearance and peaceful nature. This small fish is best suited to experienced keepers who can provide stable water conditions and a suitably sized aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show mild territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a harem with one male and multiple females.
Diet: Carnivorous. Thrives on a varied diet of high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding multiple times a day is recommended to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Avoid overly intense lighting to reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural reef environments and ensure good oxygenation.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and resting spots.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 10 cm (4 inches).
Odontanthias borbonius is considered reef safe with caution as it generally coexists well with invertebrates and corals but may occasionally nip at very small or slow-moving tankmates. Careful monitoring is advised when introducing this species to reef setups.
