Pseudochromis fuscus, commonly known as the Brown Dottyback, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vibrant colouration and active behaviour. This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is prized for its striking brown hues and bold personality.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Pseudochromis fuscus requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. This dottyback can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is best kept with similarly sized or robust species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres. A tank of this size or larger is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not inherently harmful to corals, Pseudochromis fuscus may harass smaller invertebrates or fish, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality and stable parameters.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and hiding spots to mimic natural habitat and reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches).
When introducing Pseudochromis fuscus to your aquarium, it is advisable to add it last to minimise territorial disputes. Regular observation and maintaining excellent water quality will help ensure a healthy and vibrant fish.
