The Acanthurus maculiceps, commonly known as the Spotted Surgeonfish, is a visually striking tang species prized for its distinctive spotted head and vibrant body. This extra large variant is suitable for advanced hobbyists who can provide the space and care this species demands.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Spotted Surgeonfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics and other tangs. It is best housed singly or in a large aquarium with ample swimming space to reduce aggression. Compatible with a variety of other robust marine species, but caution is advised when mixing with similarly shaped or sized surgeonfish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Maintain stable water parameters with good filtration and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Spotted Surgeonfish may nip at certain corals or sessile invertebrates, so monitor interactions closely.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires consistent water quality and a well-established aquarium environment.
