The Acanthurus maculiceps, commonly known as the White-faced Surgeonfish or Spotted-head Tang, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognisable by its distinctive spotted head pattern and streamlined body, this species adds both colour and activity to your tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It may show territorial behaviour towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration of tank mates is essential.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and specialised tang pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial needs.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are suitable, mimicking their natural reef habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to allow natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
With proper care and a well-maintained environment, the Acanthurus maculiceps can be a stunning and rewarding species for marine fish enthusiasts.
