The Acanthurus mata, commonly known as the mata tang, is a visually stunning species prized for its vibrant blue and yellow markings and dynamic swimming behaviour. This small tang is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts who can provide the space and care it requires.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species needs stable water parameters and a spacious environment to thrive.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots to reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space. Maintain excellent water quality with stable parameters and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the mata tang may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Providing a well-structured environment with live rock for grazing and hiding will help reduce stress and promote natural behaviours. Regular water changes and a balanced diet are essential for maintaining health and vibrant colouration.
