Labroides bicolor, or the Bicolor Cleaner Wrasse, is a striking and beneficial addition to marine aquariums. Known for its distinctive two-tone colouration and cleaning behaviour, this species plays an important role in maintaining the health of tank inhabitants by removing ectoparasites.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and a peaceful community.
Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive. Best kept singly or in pairs to avoid territorial disputes.
Diet: Primarily carnivorous, feeding on parasites and small invertebrates. In captivity, supplement with high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised cleaner fish diets.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, safe for reef tanks and invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium, with plenty of live rock for shelter and cleaning stations.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches).
Due to their specialised diet and behaviour, Labroides bicolor can be challenging to maintain for beginners. They thrive best in mature aquariums with a healthy population of client fish. Avoid housing with aggressive species that may stress the wrasse.
