The Melanurus Wrasse (Anampses melanurus) is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its vibrant colouration and dynamic swimming patterns. This species is best suited to larger, mature aquariums where it can thrive in a stable environment with ample live rock for foraging and shelter.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This wrasse requires stable water parameters and a secure tank lid, as it is known to be an agile jumper.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar wrasse species. It coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with specialised wrasse pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Melanurus Wrasse may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp or small crabs, so caution is advised in sensitive reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting and moderate water flow are suitable, replicating natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock structures to allow natural foraging behaviour and hiding spots to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
