Anampses melanurus, commonly known as the Melanurus Wrasse, is a striking marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature. This medium-sized wrasse typically reaches up to 20 cm in length, making it a manageable and attractive addition to a variety of marine aquarium setups.
Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, Anampses melanurus thrives best in well-established tanks with a minimum volume of 120 litres. It prefers a reef environment or fish-only aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. However, it may show territorial behaviour towards similar wrasse species or conspecifics, so it is best kept singly or in a large enough tank to reduce stress.
Diet: Anampses melanurus is carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Reef Safety: This wrasse is considered reef safe with caution. While it generally coexists peacefully with corals and invertebrates, it may occasionally nip at small sessile invertebrates or crustaceans.
Care Requirements: Maintain stable water parameters with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Moderate lighting is suitable, especially if housed in reef tanks with corals.
Providing plenty of live rock and hiding places will help reduce stress and encourage natural foraging behaviour. A secure lid is essential as wrasses are known jumpers.
