Prognathodes aculeatus, commonly known as the Longsnout Butterflyfish, is a captivating medium-sized marine fish prized for its distinctive markings and graceful swimming behaviour. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Prognathodes aculeatus is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar butterflyfish species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates and can be kept in a community reef aquarium with caution.
Diet: In the aquarium, this butterflyfish requires a varied diet rich in meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplementing with sponge-based foods is beneficial to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should be mature and well-established with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should support a reef environment but does not require intense levels.
Reef Compatibility: Prognathodes aculeatus is generally considered reef safe with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates. Monitor behaviour closely when introduced to reef tanks.
