Prognathodes aculeatus, commonly known as the Longsnout Butterflyfish, is a beautifully patterned marine fish prized for its unique appearance and peaceful nature. This small-sized butterflyfish is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums, especially those with plenty of live rock and hiding spaces.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and specialised marine fish pellets or flakes. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates; suitable for fish-only or well-established reef tanks with caution.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting and moderate water flow are ideal, replicating natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide ample live rock for grazing and shelter. Position in mid to lower levels of the aquarium.
