Prognathodes aculeatus, commonly referred to as the Longsnout Butterflyfish, is a captivating species prized for its unique appearance and graceful swimming. This large variant is suitable for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy; best kept with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with overly territorial or aggressive fish. Suitable for reef tanks with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement diet with high-quality marine flakes or pellets formulated for butterflyfish.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions. Requires well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.023-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural reef environments.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Position in mid to upper levels of the tank where it can swim freely and access feeding areas.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
