Chaetodon bennetti, commonly known as Bennett’s Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized by experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large butterflyfish features a distinctive pattern of bold black and white markings with yellow accents, making it a standout addition to mature reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Bennett’s Butterflyfish require stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large tank. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods. Offer a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with marine algae or spirulina to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to promote health and activity.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Suitable for mature reef tanks but caution advised as some butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
With proper care, Chaetodon bennetti can be a stunning and rewarding species for marine aquarists seeking a bold butterflyfish with unique markings.
