Bennett’s Butterflyfish (Chaetodon bennetti) is a visually captivating species prized for its unique colouration and patterning. This medium-sized butterflyfish reaches up to 15cm in length and is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Bennett’s Butterflyfish can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. However, it may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is considered reef safe with caution as it may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates.
Diet: This species requires a varied diet rich in meaty foods and specialised preparations such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine flakes or pellets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplementation with live rock algae and sponges is beneficial.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. The aquarium should be mature with stable water parameters and abundant live rock to support natural grazing behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable nitrate and phosphate levels.
Additional Care: Regular monitoring of water quality and a stress-free environment are essential for longevity. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry or diet.
