The Xanthichthys auromarginatus, commonly known as the golden-edged triggerfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its vibrant blue body and distinctive golden margins on its fins. This large male specimen is a captivating addition to any mature marine aquarium.
Known for its generally peaceful temperament compared to other triggerfish, the Xanthichthys auromarginatus is suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish species. However, it is recommended to avoid housing with very small or timid fish due to its size and occasional territorial behaviour.
Care Requirements: This species requires a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. A well-established aquarium with stable water parameters is essential.
Diet should be varied and include meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish. Feeding multiple times per day in small portions helps maintain optimal health.
Water conditions should be maintained with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and stable pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow and good filtration are recommended to simulate natural reef environments.
Placement in the aquarium should allow for open swimming areas as well as some rockwork or caves for shelter. This species appreciates a reef environment but may occasionally nip at invertebrates, so caution is advised when housing with delicate corals or crustaceans.
