Valenciennea wardii, commonly known as Ward’s Goby, is a peaceful and active species prized for its sand-sifting behaviour. Sold as a pair, these gobies are excellent additions to marine aquariums with sandy substrates, where they help aerate and clean the sand bed.
Care Level: Moderate. Valenciennea wardii requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank with plenty of live sand.
Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community reef tanks with other non-territorial species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and specialised sinking pellets or granules designed for gobies.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) to provide adequate space for burrowing and swimming.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimics natural conditions and helps maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide a deep sandy substrate (at least 5cm) for burrowing and sand-sifting behaviour. Decorate with live rock to offer shelter and resting spots.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches) total length.
Reef Safe: Yes, safe with corals and invertebrates.
Valenciennea wardii pairs are best kept in established tanks with stable parameters. They are shy initially but become active sand sifters once acclimated. Avoid housing with aggressive or highly territorial fish to reduce stress.
