Valenciennea strigata, commonly referred to as the Sleeper Goby, is a popular choice for marine aquarists seeking a peaceful, sand-sifting fish that adds both activity and interest to reef aquariums. This small to medium-sized goby is renowned for its distinctive elongated body, striking markings, and its habit of sifting through the substrate to find food.
Care Level: Moderate. Valenciennea strigata requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium with a deep sandy substrate to exhibit natural behaviours.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is peaceful and generally compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates. It can be kept singly or in pairs but avoid housing multiple males together to prevent territorial disputes.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with sinking pellets or flakes formulated for marine carnivores. Regular feeding encourages natural sand-sifting behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space and substrate depth for burrowing and foraging.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow is preferred to maintain water quality without disturbing the sandy substrate excessively.
Placement: Provide a deep sand bed (at least 5 cm) to allow natural digging and sifting. Include live rock for shelter and territory boundaries.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: Yes. Valenciennea strigata is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
