The Valenciennea sexguttata, commonly known as the Six-spot Goby, is a peaceful and fascinating addition to any marine aquarium. Sold as a pair, these gobies exhibit their characteristic six distinct spots along their slender bodies and are renowned for their sand-sifting behaviour, which helps maintain substrate cleanliness.
Care Level: Moderate. Valenciennea sexguttata requires stable water parameters and a well-established sandy substrate to thrive.
Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, making them suitable for community tanks with other peaceful species.
Diet: Primarily carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates and detritus found within the sand. Supplement their diet with high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide ample space for burrowing and swimming. A deep sandy substrate (at least 5 cm) is essential for their natural sand-sifting behaviour.
Compatibility: Best kept with other peaceful fish species. Avoid aggressive tank mates that may stress or outcompete them for food.
Reef Safety: Yes. Valenciennea sexguttata is considered reef safe as it does not harm corals or invertebrates.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Adding a pair encourages natural behaviours and reduces stress. They may form monogamous pairs and establish territories within the substrate.
