Valenciennea randalli, commonly known as Randall’s Goby, is a peaceful and fascinating burrowing goby species prized in marine aquariums. This fish is well suited for sandy substrates where it actively sifts through the sand, helping to aerate and maintain the substrate health.
Temperament and Compatibility: Randall’s Goby is a peaceful species that coexists well with other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. It is generally reef safe and does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
Diet: This species primarily feeds on small invertebrates and detritus found within the sand. In captivity, it accepts a varied diet including live or frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised sinking pellets or granules designed for bottom feeders.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for burrowing and swimming. A deep sandy substrate of at least 5cm is essential to allow natural digging behaviour.
Water Parameters and Care: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Place Randall’s Goby in a sandy area of the tank with plenty of open space for burrowing. It may form symbiotic relationships with certain pistol shrimps, though this is not guaranteed.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches).
