Valenciennea puellaris, commonly known as the Sailfin or Diamond Watchman Goby, is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking peaceful, substrate-cleaning fish. Sold as a pair, these gobies are available in various sizes to suit different tank setups.
These gobies are renowned for their sand-sifting behaviour, which helps aerate the substrate and reduce detritus build-up. They thrive in tanks with fine sand beds and plenty of live rock for shelter. Their peaceful temperament makes them compatible with a wide range of community marine species, including other gobies, clownfish, and small reef-safe fish.
Care Recommendations: Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH around 8.1-8.4. Provide a minimum tank size of 75 litres to allow sufficient space for natural behaviours. A fine sandy substrate is essential for their sand-sifting activity. Moderate water flow and moderate lighting are suitable, replicating their natural reef lagoon habitats.
Diet should include a varied selection of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding multiple times daily in small amounts encourages natural foraging behaviour.
When introducing a pair, ensure they are compatible and monitor for any territorial disputes, although pairs typically coexist peacefully. Avoid aggressive tank mates that may harass or outcompete them.
