Valenciennea muralis is a peaceful and active goby species prized for its sand-sifting behaviour, which helps maintain a clean substrate in marine aquariums. This species is suitable for intermediate hobbyists and thrives best in established tanks with plenty of live sand and hiding places.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, making it compatible with a wide range of community fish. It may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar gobies, so it is best kept singly or as a mated pair.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with sinking pellets or flakes designed for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) or larger to provide adequate space for natural behaviour and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow preferred to mimic natural reef environments without stressing the fish.
Placement: Provide a sandy substrate at least 5 cm deep to allow natural sand-sifting. Include plenty of live rock for shelter and territory.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: Yes, safe with corals and invertebrates.
