Valenciennea longipinnis, commonly known as the Longfin Sleeper Goby, is a peaceful and active species prized for its sand-sifting behaviour. Available as a pair in various sizes, these gobies are an excellent addition to marine aquariums with sandy substrates.
They spend much of their time sifting through the sand to find food, which helps aerate the substrate and maintain a healthy tank environment. Their slender bodies and long fins make them visually appealing, while their gentle temperament ensures compatibility with a wide range of tank mates.
Care and Husbandry
- Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community tanks.
- Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised sinking pellets.
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide ample space for burrowing and swimming.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4.
- Substrate: Fine sand is essential to allow natural digging and sifting behaviour.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; generally safe with corals but avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Additional Notes
Providing a pair encourages natural social behaviour and reduces stress. Ensure the aquarium has plenty of hiding places and a peaceful environment to thrive. Regular feeding and stable water quality are key to maintaining health.
