Tripneustes ventricosus, commonly known as the West Indian Sea Egg, is a medium-sized sea urchin popular among marine aquarium hobbyists for its effective algae grazing capabilities. This species is a valuable addition to reef tanks and marine setups, helping to maintain clean rock surfaces and reduce unwanted algae growth.
Care Level: Tripneustes ventricosus is considered hardy and suitable for intermediate aquarists. It requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium environment.
Feeding: Primarily herbivorous, this sea urchin grazes on algae naturally present in the tank. Supplement its diet with dried seaweed (nori) or specialised herbivore pellets to ensure optimal nutrition.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is generally reef safe and compatible with most invertebrates and fish. However, care should be taken to avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may harm the urchin. Its spines can cause injury if handled improperly.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural habitats, and lighting should be moderate to support algal growth for grazing.
Placement: Place the urchin on live rock or substrate where algae growth is present. Avoid placing it near delicate corals or slow-moving invertebrates to prevent accidental damage.
Origin: Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 10 cm in diameter.
