The Blue Scaly Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a popular and visually stunning giant clam species prized for its vibrant blue mantle and unique shell texture characterised by prominent scaly ridges. At approximately 6cm, this clam is a manageable size for marine aquarists looking to add a splash of colour and natural filtration to their reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This clam requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or strong LED systems is essential to promote photosynthesis and overall health.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to avoid damaging the delicate mantle while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis, occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth, especially in lower nutrient systems.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or in areas with strong direct flow.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Generally reef safe, but care should be taken to avoid housing with predatory invertebrates or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30cm in mature specimens.
Minimum Tank Size: Recommended 150 litres or larger to maintain stable water quality and provide adequate space.
