The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a captivating small clam species prized for its brilliant yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterns. Reaching around 9cm in size, this clam is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking to add vibrant colour and natural filtration to their reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and moderate lighting to thrive.
Feeding: While Tridacna maxima clams derive most of their nutrition from photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within their mantles, they also benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Lighting and Water Flow: Provide moderate to high lighting, ideally from LED or T5 fixtures designed for reef aquariums. Water flow should be moderate to gentle to ensure adequate nutrient exchange without damaging the delicate mantle.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised clam bases. Ensure it is placed where it can receive sufficient light and is protected from direct aggression by tank mates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres (approximately 25 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water quality and provide sufficient space.
Regular monitoring of water parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, and nitrates is essential to support healthy growth.
