The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a small yet spectacular giant clam species prized for its vivid yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterns. At approximately 3cm, this clam is a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums, providing both aesthetic appeal and biological interest.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water conditions and adequate lighting.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods to support growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential to support photosynthesis. LED or metal halide lighting systems that provide strong PAR levels are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow to prevent sediment accumulation on the mantle while avoiding tissue damage.
Placement: Position on a stable, hard substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid shaded or low-light zones to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful, but avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Tank Size: Minimum 100 litres recommended to maintain stable water parameters and accommodate growth.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15cm mantle width in mature specimens.
Regular water testing and maintenance of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels are important to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and temperature.
