The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a stunning small clam species prized for its vivid yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterns. At approximately 4cm in size, this clam is suitable for established marine reef tanks where water parameters are stable and lighting is moderate to strong.
Care Requirements: This clam thrives under moderate to high lighting, ideally provided by LED or T5 aquarium lights designed for reef systems. It requires stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and good calcium and alkalinity levels to support shell growth.
Feeding: Tridacna maxima primarily relies on photosynthesis via symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues but will benefit from occasional supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or marine microalgae, especially in lower light conditions.
Placement and Compatibility: Place the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or reef-safe sand where it can attach securely. Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure nutrient exchange without causing stress. This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants but avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Additional Notes: Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry or lighting to prevent stress. Regular monitoring of water quality and calcium levels will promote healthy growth. This clam is a beautiful addition to any mature reef aquarium, adding vibrant colour and natural filtration benefits.
