The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a visually striking giant clam species prized for its vibrant yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterns. At 12cm, this clam is a mature specimen suitable for experienced marine aquarists with established reef tanks.
Tridacna maxima hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Therefore, moderate to strong lighting is essential to maintain its health and vibrant colouration. LED or T5 lighting systems designed for reef aquariums are ideal.
Water flow should be moderate to ensure adequate gas exchange and to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle, which can cause stress or damage. Placement should be on a stable, hard substrate such as rockwork or specialised clam bases, avoiding areas of intense direct flow or shadow.
Feeding is generally not required if lighting and water quality are optimal, but occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and vitality.
This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants, though care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Regular monitoring of water parameters—especially calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, and stable salinity—is crucial for long-term health.
