The Tridacna maxima (Greenish) is a small giant clam species prized for its vivid green hues and intricate mantle patterns. At approximately 9cm, this clam is suitable for mature reef aquariums where stable water parameters and moderate to strong lighting are provided.
Tridacna maxima hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues, which supply much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Therefore, adequate lighting is essential to maintain its vibrant colouration and health. Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure proper gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Feeding is generally not required if lighting and water quality are optimal; however, occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and vitality.
This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants but should be placed carefully to avoid shading by corals or aggressive neighbours. Position the clam on a stable substrate or rockwork where it can receive direct light without risk of falling or being disturbed.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is important to support shell growth and overall health.
