The Tridacna maxima (Greenish) is a small giant clam species prized for its striking green hues and intricate mantle patterns. At approximately 8cm, this clam is an excellent addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and biological benefits.
Care Requirements: Tridacna maxima clams require stable, well-established reef tanks with moderate to strong lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. Ensure water parameters remain consistent, with calcium levels between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity of 8-12 dKH, and magnesium around 1250-1350 ppm. Moderate water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding direct strong currents that may cause stress.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis via their symbiotic algae, Tridacna maxima can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or dissolved organics, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip or disturb the clam’s mantle. Placement should be on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area, ensuring the clam can fully open without obstruction.
Additional Notes: Tridacna maxima clams are sensitive to rapid changes in water chemistry and temperature. Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are essential for long-term health. They can grow up to 15cm in captivity but typically remain smaller than other giant clam species.
