The Blue Tridacna maxima, commonly known as the Maxima Clam, is a captivating addition to mature marine reef aquariums. Originating from the Pacific, this ultra variant displays vibrant blue hues that enhance any reef display.
Care Level: Moderate – requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as T5, LED, or metal halide is essential to support photosynthesis and vibrant coloration.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow to prevent sediment accumulation while avoiding tissue damage.
Placement: Position on a stable substrate or rockwork in well-lit areas of the aquarium. Ensure adequate space to prevent irritation from neighbouring corals or invertebrates.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or animals that may nip at the clam’s mantle.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water quality and adequate space.
Origin: Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15cm in captivity, though growth rates vary.
Regular monitoring of water parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is advised to support healthy shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to reduce stress.
