The Tridacna maxima (Blue) is a small yet spectacular clam species prized for its vibrant blue mantle and intricate patterns. At approximately 6cm, this clam is an excellent addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both beauty and ecological benefits.
Care and Husbandry: This clam requires strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure proper gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Placement should be on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised clam bases, preferably in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or invertebrates that may harm the clam.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna maxima can benefit from supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised filter-feeder foods, especially in lower-light setups.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is considered reef safe and generally compatible with most reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam’s mantle.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and low nutrient levels to prevent algae overgrowth.
