The Black Tiger Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually stunning giant clam species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its striking black and white striped mantle. At approximately 5cm in size, this clam is suitable for established reef tanks where it can thrive under proper conditions.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna maxima requires moderate to high lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and provide adequate space.
Water flow should be moderate and indirect to avoid damaging the clam’s delicate mantle while ensuring sufficient nutrient exchange. Placement on a stable rock or sandy substrate in a well-lit area is ideal. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or invertebrates that may harm the clam.
While primarily photosynthetic, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and vitality, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: The Black Tiger Clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Regular monitoring of water quality, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential to support shell growth and overall health.
