The Tridacna Crocea clam, measuring approximately 10cm, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a visually striking and relatively hardy invertebrate. This species is renowned for its vibrant mantle patterns and colours, which can range from blues and greens to browns and purples, making it a captivating addition to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended. Tridacna Crocea requires stable water parameters and adequate lighting to thrive.
Feeding: While these clams derive much of their nutrition from photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within their mantles, they also benefit from supplemental feeding. Target feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods 2-3 times per week supports optimal health.
Lighting Requirements: Strong lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic algae. LED or T5 lighting systems providing moderate to high PAR levels are suitable.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Avoid strong currents that may cause the clam to retract frequently.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, secure substrate such as rock or sand bed in well-lit areas of the aquarium. Ensure it is not shaded by corals or décor.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Tridacna Crocea is reef safe and generally peaceful. It coexists well with most reef inhabitants but avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide stable water conditions and adequate space.
Regular monitoring of water parameters including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is important to support shell growth and overall health.
