The Tridacna Crocea clam is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and relatively hardy nature. At approximately 9cm, this clam is suitable for medium to large reef tanks where it can receive adequate lighting and stable water parameters.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna Crocea requires moderate to high lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can enhance growth and vitality.
Water flow should be moderate and indirect to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding tissue damage. Placement on a stable substrate or rockwork is essential, as this species often embeds itself partially into live rock.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. However, avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle. It is a valuable addition to reef tanks, contributing both colour and biodiversity.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and provide sufficient space. Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is important to support shell growth.
