Trapezia lutea is a fascinating species of coral guard crab prized for its vibrant colours and symbiotic behaviour with corals. These crabs play an important role in reef aquariums by protecting corals from predators such as crown-of-thorns starfish and other coral-eating pests.
Available in various sizes, Trapezia lutea is a hardy invertebrate suitable for established reef tanks. They thrive best in well-maintained marine aquariums with stable water parameters and plenty of live coral hosts.
Care and Husbandry
- Diet: Omnivorous scavengers; feed on small meaty foods, detritus, and leftover fish food. Supplement with finely chopped seafood or specialised invertebrate pellets.
- Compatibility: Reef safe and generally peaceful. Best kept with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with large predatory fish or aggressive crabs.
- Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 75 litres recommended to provide sufficient space and stable environment.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
- Placement: Introduce near healthy branching corals such as Pocillopora or Acropora, which serve as natural hosts.
Trapezia lutea crabs contribute to the health and vitality of reef tanks by reducing coral predation and cleaning detritus. Their presence enhances both the ecological balance and visual appeal of marine aquaria.
