Thalassoma rueppellii, or Rueppell’s Wrasse, is a strikingly colourful species native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean. Known for its vibrant blue and green hues, this small wrasse adds dynamic movement and interest to marine aquaria.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Rueppell’s Wrasse requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a community tank with non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space. A well-decorated aquarium with live rock offers hiding places and foraging opportunities.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Rueppell’s Wrasse may nip at small invertebrates or sessile invertebrates, so monitor closely if housed in reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
