Amblyeleotris randalli, commonly known as Randall’s Prawn Goby, is a captivating marine fish prized for its peaceful temperament and unique symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimps. This medium-sized goby is an excellent addition to reef and sandy-bottom aquariums, where it can exhibit natural burrowing and cooperative behaviours.
Care and Husbandry: Randall’s Prawn Goby requires a minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) to provide ample space for burrowing and swimming. A sandy substrate is essential to allow natural digging and burrow construction, often shared with a pistol shrimp. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef tanks are recommended.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen preparations. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Compatibility and Temperament: Randall’s Prawn Goby is peaceful and reef safe, making it suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species. It coexists well with invertebrates and corals, provided there is sufficient space and hiding spots. Avoid housing with large, aggressive fish that may prey on smaller gobies.
Origin and Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species typically grows to around 8 cm in length. Its striking pattern and behaviour make it a popular choice among marine aquarists.
